Is the Samsung Galaxy at risk? Motorola is rolling out a new EDGE+ smartphone.
Following weeks of leaks and rumors, Motorola has finally unveiled its long rumored Motorola Edge+ smartphone. This android phone will use 5G networks, while sporting a curved 6.5 inch edge to edge, FHD+ OLED screen.
In addition to 5G, the EDGE will possess a Wi-Fi 6 capability. It boasts a triple camera system which includes a 108 megapixel camera, Qualcomm SnapdragonTM 865 processor and two stereo speakers. It comes with android 10 and boasts a 256 GB storage capability, and comes in two colors- Smokey Sangria and Thunder Grey.
This new smartphone will go for $999.99 with the release date pegged at 14th May.
Motorola is also rolling out a new smartphone too known as the Edge; this runs on a Snapdragon 765 processor and uses a smaller battery. The Edge is also the same size as its expensive relative. Availability and pricing have not yet been announced for it.
The Edge+ will be only exclusive to Verizon, whiles the Edge will be available to other carriers. Verizon has offered up to $700 off the price for those willing to trade their old devices to switch to some Verizon unlimited plans.
The new smartphones were released on Wednesday at an online event after Motorola had to put off their original plans of introducing its Flagship device when the Motorola World Congress was to be held in February. After the event was called off due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, some details of the new smartphone have leaked over the past few months including its pictures.
Android central was able to perform a hands-on review of the smartphone at Motorola’s headquarters many months ago. The reviewer lavished praise on the phone’s technology and specs but criticized the exclusivity to Verizon and its policy of only guaranteeing one major Operating system upgrade.
Motorola has at various points in the past been a leading player in the mobile phones market with market hits such as RAZR phones and Droid smartphone which was also Verizon exclusive.
Recently after the company’s mobile division was bought by Google and later Lenovo, the company has focused on producing cheap feature phones rather facing Samsung and Apple head to head.
The new Edge+ smartphone is viewed by many people as a more direct competition to mobile heavy weight Samsung’s Galaxy line, the Edge+ has more semblances to the Galaxy phones than the Apple IPhones and is even offered at the same price. The first 5G IPhone is expected to be released later this year, barring any supply hitches and delays which might be caused by the global coronavirus.
Should Samsung fret? Will it be par with other higher end smartphones in the market?
